Conducting a workshop is not only a teaching job for me. I choose the subjects for my workshops according to my own questions and professional interests, in order to deal with the secrets of our craft that are not yet opened to me. Upon entering my workshop you’ll automatically become the collaborator, the researcher – not only the student. Please consider that when choosing your involvement.

Mikhail Chekhov and his book “On the Art of Actor”
advanced acting workshop with Oleg Liptsin

“…We all believe in the power of books and methods. We all can read and more or less understand what we’ve read. Why then it hardly ever happens that books really answer our questions?”
(From conversation of two scholars.)

Academy Award nominee Michael Chekhov brought a unique technique of acting to Hollywood. The Moscow Art Theater’s most brilliant star, he escaped from Russia following a controversial portrayal of Hamlet. His system turned Stanislavsky’s acting theory on its head and empowered the legendary Hollywood stars and directors of the 40s, 50s and beyond to create their most memorable work on stage and in film. The range and scope of the noted artists to be inspired by Michael Chekhov’s coaching is astonishing: Ingrid Bergman, Lloyd Bridges, Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood, Jennifer Jones, Gene Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Robert Walker, directors Martin Ritt, Arthur Penn and many others…

This workshop proposes a practical experience of immersing into the mystery of emotional acting. One of the best actors/teachers of the 20th century Russian and American theatre – Mikhail Chekhov – whom Stanislavsky called, “my system as it is,” created a unique volume of practical advise for actors who are interested in blossoming their imagination and artistic spontaneity on stage.

Mikhail Chekhov’s method of training actors and developing characters on stage has captivated the interest and attention of many acclaimed theatre professionals all other the world since it was published in 1946 under the title “On the Art of Actor”. This method was substantially adapted to the contemporary theatre by such renowned Russian directors and pedagogues as Maria Knebel and Mikhail Butkevich.

Oleg Liptsin, who was a student of Mikhail Butkevich in Moscow in the mid-80s and since then is practicing and developing the adapted method in his directing and teaching in different countries, will read, analyze and exercise with you the most important parts of M.Chekhov’s system.
During this intensive workshop each participant will have a chance to apply a theory
from M.Chekhov's book to his own acting experience in preparing a monologue, scene or a character from such classical authors as Shakespeare, Gogol, Moliere and others. The workshop can also be seen as a tool for elaborating your repertoire for future auditions.

Method of Action Analyses
University course for the 2nd – 3rd year students in Acting/Directing

Method of Acting Analyses is a practical methodology of analyzing dramatic text from the position of a practicing actor/director for the reason of applying this text on stage using one of the most advanced and contemporary developed techniques of structured acting.
This methodology represents the evolution of the technique invented by Stanislavsky in the last period of his life and commonly known as a Method of Physical Actions. After Stanislavsky the initial idea was widely developed and adopted to the contemporary acting and staging needs by such eminent masters of Russian theatre as Maria Knebel, Anatoly Efros, Mikhail Butkevich and Anatoly Vassiliev.
Method of Acting Analyses becomes in our time one of the most sufficient and established tools for analyzing the dramatic text in direct connection with the tasks and challenges of modern physical theatre. It helps to transform the literary script into immediate artistic actions and encourages the user to search for emotional physicality and improvisational freedom within the analyzed structure.
During the course students will analyze two types of dramatic texts (one – from psychological, another one – from poetic tradition) and practically apply their analysis on stage. Such analysis also allows studying and understanding the structure of dramatic scene as well as the artistic specifics of different authors.

Some other proposed workshops:

  • The Etude Method of text analysis and rehearsals (Stanislavsky-Knebel-Efros)
  • Towards the Theatre-Of-Game (Mikhail Butkevich and his book)
  • The undercurrent in A. Chekhov’s plays
  • Risky games of Moliere
  • How to transform a non-dramatic text into stage performance?
  • Theatre of Russian Absurd (Kharms, Vvedensky)
  • Structured improvisation – a new way of acting
  • Directing a modern show
